The project included the rehabilitation of twin bascule bridges with structural, mechanical, electrical and roadway repairs. Inspection tasks included the replacement of existing steel grid deck and deteriorated structural steel, repair and replacement of electrical and mechanical systems of draw bridges, Asbestos abatement associated with electrical system repair and replacement, Structural steel painting, Containment systems for paint removal and Bridge tower repairs and painting.

Design tasks performed included development of design report with evaluation of night time construction and determination of wetland boundaries. Final design plans included rehabilitation/replacement of various electrical and mechanical components, bridge deck replacement, architectural repairs to buildings, several maintenance and protection of traffic schemes, and sediment and erosion control.

Rehabilitation of Palmer Road & Bridge

Provided Design and Construction Administration services for this project. The subject area is located along Palmer Road from Saw Mill River Road to Central Park Avenue (CR 100) and also included the bridge carrying Palmer Road over Central Park Avenue.

The project goal was to rehabilitate Palmer Road by pavement milling and asphalt resurfacing, and performing miscellaneous tasks such as adjusting hardware elevations, pavement markings, curb, sidewalk and minor traffic signal work. The bridge rehabilitation consisted of addressing safety issues, the restoration of deteriorated members to As-Built capacity, and the application of protective coatings and other measures to prevent future deterioration. Palmer Road has numerous horizontal and vertical curves which significantly limit sight distance. Factors limiting sight distance include the horizontal curvature of the roadway, presence of vehicles parked along the north shoulder of Palmer Road and the close proximity of the intersection of Palmer Road with Saw Mill River Road.

Nassau County Bridge Parapet Replacement

The project consisted of Design Phases I-VI. It included the replacement of bridge parapets at over 20 locations, throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties, where parkways cross over roadways.

Final design plans included:

  • Reinforced concrete parapets with stone masonry veneers Bar lists
  • Maintenance and protection of traffic
  • Guide rail parapet transition piece details
  • Guide rail details
  • Utility pole relocation tables

Construction support services were also provided for this project.

Milburn Creek Culvert Rehabilitation

The goal of the project was to extend the service life of the existing structure or provide for a replacement structure thereby ensuring safe and uninterrupted access along Merrick Road. Project included preparing a study and design plans for a culvert rehabilitation. Subsequent to performing an in-depth inspection of the culvert, several alternatives with conceptual construction costs were provided in the study.

The final bid package included detailed maintenance and protection of traffic plans, specific culvert repair details and special specifications.

The goal of the Bronx River Parkway Bridge Replacement, North and South of Harney Road Project was not only to replace the two existing structures with structures of similar historic characteristics, but to also provide the engineering for construction methods that will cause the least impact on the park environment, the park infrastructure, and the traveling public, both during and after construction.

As part of this project, existing conditions was analyzed and multiple alternative solutions were explored in an effort to provide the most cost effective solution for these complex project objectives.
