The Project consisted of reducing vehicle delay along a Suffolk County owned arterial roadway, Portion Road. At the time, the roadway was undergoing a complete reconstruction, including new drainage, utility relocations and roadway widening. As part of the overall plan to improve the roadway, the new traffic signals needed a new traffic signal timing plan incorporated, to improve vehicle travel along the corridor. In order to provide a low cost and responsive solution for the need for traffic signal timing, Suffolk County Department of Public Works elected to utilize a consulting firm to provide an additional staff member to solely provide traffic signal timing based on the information provided.

Provideed comprehensive traffic signal timing plans in a compressed schedule which achieved the desired goals of being on schedule and within budget. A key aspect of the project was the constant communication which facilitated the resolution of factors used in the modeling software.

On-Call Traffic Signal Design

This project included various signal designs for New York State roadways in Nassau County.

The designs included the preparation of base mapping including field edits, preliminary design of traffic signal layouts, preparation of estimates and table quantities, determining locations of underground and above ground utilities, and evaluating use of span wire versus mast arm signal designs. Final design plans were developed for new signal locations, full signal rebuilds, the conversion of existing firehouse flashing beacon to a full three-color control, new signal installation of moderate complexity, addition of pedestrian crossing signals, full upgrades to existing signalized intersections, addition of dual yellow warning beacons to existing overhead sign assemblies, etc.

Montauk Highway Traffic Signal Timing

The project consisted of reducing vehicle delay along a Suffolk County owned arterial roadway, Montauk Highway. The roadway experiences extensive delays during peak periods which results in motorist frustration and difficulties for motorists attempting to access the roadway from adjacent streets and parking lots. Suffolk County Department of Public Works elected to utilize a consulting firm to provide an additional staff member to solely provide traffic signal timing based on the information provided.

CR-111 at LIE Intersection Capacity Improvements

The project consisted of an interchange improvement study in order to determine potential improvements to the area. The interchange experiences traffic congestion during the Friday PM peak period and the Sunday PM peak period. The traffic congestion is caused by motorists traveling to and from the Hamptons area of Long Island. Several site visits and traffic counts were performed at critical periods in order to accurately model the existing conditions. Future traffic volumes were estimated for ETC, ETC+10 and ETC+20.

Several alternatives were considered for the study. One alternative was to coordinate the traffic signals along CR 111 in order to minimize the delay. Other alternatives considered incorporating cloverleaf ramps into the intersection. It was determined that the cloverleaf ramps would improve the intersection but at a significant cost. A unique feature of the design was the potential closing of a local roadway in close proximity to the project area. It was determined to designate the roadway as allowing rights out only in order to minimize its impact on adjacent intersections. Another factor which needed to be incorporated into the traffic analysis was the anticipated construction of a commercial development immediately south of the project area. A trip generation study was performed to determine anticipated traffic volumes which were then incorporated into the traffic analysis for the corridor. The study will be used by the County as a decision making tool for future capital programs.

  • Station Road at Brookhaven Avenue in North Bellport
  • Mastic Beach Firehouse in Mastic Beach

The scope of the project consisted of performing topographic field survey for the intersection including features such as curbs, pavement markings, fences, sidewalks, drainage structures, existing traffic signal equipment, utilities and spot elevations, preparation of traffic signal plan, traffic signal mast arm, and pedestrian signals.
