Randall Airport – Runway Safety Area Improvements / Earth Retaining Wall

AVIATION DESIGN »

Location: Orange County, New York
Client: Randall Airport
Completion Date: 2011

TSPE designed a standard Runway Safety Area (RSA) at Randall Airport. The safety area was nonconforming due to the transverse grade and the restrictions imposed by the property line and Interstate 84. A standard RSA was required to meet FAA standards, provide a surface from which the airport equipment would be able to maintain (i.e., mow), and allow for inspection of the airport perimeter road.

TSPE designed an earth-filled retaining wall (1:1) and minor drainage improvements. An area was excavated (4,300 CY) and a geogrid was specified to wrap layers of soil to stabilize the slope. Proper compaction and wrapping techniques were essential to the slope’s stability. The project included local permitting and construction documents used for public bidding.

TSPE also provided construction inspection for a runway safety area project which constructed an earth-filled retaining wall (1:1) to provide drainage improvements. A geogrid was used to wrap layers of soil to stabilize the slope. Proper compaction and wrapping techniques were essential to the slope’s stability. The project resulted in 4,300 CY of excavation and improved the safety of the airfield.
